Chapter 30
The Question of Nature
“Now I have a question for you. (E.J. asks the group.) Someone supposedly living in the future, is he really living in the future?”
“N0,” said M. “He is really living in the past.” [p. 72]
A discussion ensues about the projection of the past into an imagined future. Mostly, I suppose we live in the jurisdiction of the past. We speculate about the past being reconfigured into a different puzzle. Yet the pieces are rearranged into a series of “if only…”
Yet, is it not possible that the future does lie within us? That perception is a sensing of the un-manifested within us. We can sense the spirit of our souls unfurled. Our job is pay attention to that finely tuned sensing. Within that process lies the future, that is our path ahead. Our Work on Self is revealed.
Imagine the Future.

Chapter 35
Do We Need A Guide?
“The first real task of a group is to make exact aims both as individual candidates for the work and also as a group.”(p.82)
The process of guide selection is multi-layered. The first element in this selection process is to recognize that you need a guide. This element borders on the discussion of how to ask for help. Sometimes one realizes the need for help and thinks of such a need as a weakness. There is something you do not know, therefore you are weak. Actually, such a recognition is simply a fact. So, overcome the ego enough to understand you need a guide.
Then the aspirant is faced with the problem of selecting the guide. This is also a tricky proposition. You are asking someone to help lead you into a region you do not know. Since you do not know about this undiscovered country, how are you able to select a proper guide? Hummm… a conundrum. You can rely on what others say, but this is not a reliable data point as the source may not be reliable. But, you might be able to evaluate the fruits of that guides work. What can you see about the guide? Has he led people to and from the goal wished for? How have those people fared?
