The Sacrifice of the Guru – Life of Hopelessness
For this sacrifice EJ Gold suggests that the voyager lives as the guru. One takes on disciples, one dispenses Grace according to objective merit and impartial justice. One becomes the Guru, thus sacrificing help from others.
What is taught to the seeker by performing this sacrifice? A number of aspects of the path are learned if one takes on this role and actually practices the posture. There is no attaining to the role of the Guru, actually, by any means other than through objective attainment of that position. It is not a position that one seeks or that one should want. It is a position of great sacrifice.
If the aspirant stands in that role for a while, we learn immediately the difficulty of standing in the posture of Guru. We start to sense the role of holding the embodiment of the Great Guide. It is a role of utter service and full sacrifice of the stance as an individual.
Stand there if you are able. You will sense, maybe for the first time, what it feels like to stand on your own ground, a sense of aloneness. You may get the first signs where your ground of authority may be. You see the task before the Guru. One senses the enormity of the job of the teacher. One senses the life of hopelessness.
