The Sacrifice of Comfort – Life of Austerity

Here we approach the idea of sacrificing comfort. By this time we will have begun to formulate some idea of what is meant by making a sacrifice. Here we must understand what is meant by comfort.

The classical foundation of the practice of asceticism rests with many of the practices found in the monastic orders practiced in all the fundamental religions. We find wonderful examples with the Desert Fathers of the Eastern orthodox church, in the Zen monastic orders, as well as a form of asceticism practiced by the Hasidic Jew.

But, that is not what we are discussing, what we are considering is yet more difficult and dangerous for us. We would like to discuss how YOU can find and Sacrifice ONE form of Comfort that works in you.

If one mentions the idea of Sacrifice of Comfort. Immediately, several things will come to mind, and you will say something like – “Oh Yeah! – I need to give up_______”

That is what we generally mean and how we approach the problem. Maybe there is a bit more to it. Let us see.
