[1] Page 172, paragraph 4; … as children, … we were in the waking state most of the time; that is, before the Chronic was developed by the machine to defend itself against the waking state so that it would be able to function acceptably in a social and cultural context. Can you recall any threads of that development? How were you taught to survive in the world?
[2] Page 174, paragraph 5; … in the waking state the machine no longer has will ... This is a primary characteristic of the waking state, Can you observe this and pass your thoughts on to new readers?
[3] Page 175, paragraph 4; The defense mechanism was allowed to develop in the machine, but why? Your answer, please. Expand if you are so inclined.
[4] Page 177, top of page; When we can assure ourselves that we can re-enter the sleeping state whenever we wish, we will be far less reluctant to leave the sleeping state and enter the waking state. How have you so assured your self? This is a most pragmatic step.
