The Chronic Defense Mechanism
Because of its fear of not being able to reintegrate the sleeping state, the machine has learned to defend itself against the waking state. Each individual has a particular defense mechanism called the Chronic which is triggered whenever the machine is threatened with awakening.
In the last few chapters we have been given a glimpse into the life of the essential self. What are some of the characteristics of its world. We have worked to establish a beachhead into the fourth dimension.
Now, we come back and face the machine. We see that to maintain itself it has developed a formidable opponent. A worthy advisory. This is individual to each of us, and it is called the Chronic. We each developed it to survive in the world. It is the foundation of our historical personality.
As we deepen our skill at self observation, we will see what our signature might be. How do we defend our self? When push comes to shove, when we are between a rock and a hard place, when we are caught on the horns of a dilemma, when we find our selves between Scylla and Charybdis – what emerges in our personality? What tool do we bring forth to reform the sleeping state for our own perceived survival?
The true battle is between the powers and principalities of our own life path. Take on that worthy adversary, that is our battle, it is worth the fight, worth the life effort.
