The Seventh Chamber –
When entering the Seventh Chamber, the voyager is presented with a clear and distinct choice. There is presented the “Visage of Fire.” The visage takes the form of a ‘dazzling red light.’
At the same time the voyager is presented with a ‘soft yellow light.’
We are being offered help. The powerful red cleansing radiation is that help. But sometimes the help is too harsh for where we are at the moment. … and we seek refuge.
Now when the bardo of death dawns upon me,
I will abandon all projections of fear and terror,
Recognize whatever arises as the self-display of awareness,
And Kow it to be the visionary nature of the bardo.
When the time comes to reach the crucial point,
Do not fear the self-display of peaceful and wrathful ones!
This specific help is the help of overcoming our hungers and desires. We are surrounded with the world of the hungry ghosts. The power of the soft yellow light is dependent on our attachment to our hungers and desires. We say we want to be free of those attachments, now here, in this chamber we are offered the help to do so, that help is the Cleansing radiation of the Dazzling Red Radiation.
So, what then is that Red Radiation, what is the element of Fire? That power is the power of investigative knowledge. This is the power of discernment on the highest level. We are directly shown the results of hunger and desire. We see, as Tantalus experienced, that hunger if never fulfilled and desire never satisfied. But, we in our temporal selves do not believe these principles. We have general thoughts of “giving up our attachments to greed and passion.
The power of the soft yellow light is held in place by the force of our habits and attachments. We are bound by our addiction to these hungers and desires. We may conclude that we really live the life of a monk or nun. Ah, but true seeker, look closely at the small hungers that sneak into your everyday life.
Allow the cleansing radiation of that dazzling red light help with just one more hunger… today.
The Eight Chamber – Jealousy
As we enter the eight chamber we are guided by the Element of Air. We will wander on downward towards our tendencies toward jealousy and envy. But, the friendly guide will offer to us a dazzling green light which shines forth with wisdom clarity and radiance. This dazzling green light will act to cleanse our tendencies toward Jealousy and Envy.
At the same time we notice a soft red light appears before us. Do not follow this soft red light.
Rather, allow the Dazzling Green Light to cleanse the tendencies of jealousy and envy. Rest without action in this cleansing radiation – do not be afraid of this dazzling green light.
When through intense envy I wander in samasara, On the luminous path of action-accomplishing knowledge, Deliver me from the bardo’s dangerous passage, and bring me to the perfect awakened state.
The Ninth Chamber –
By now, with the help of the friendly guides, I should have been liberated by these confrontations with the family of cleansing radiations. But, if my tendencies have been too great, then, I will wander in samsara and will spiral downward in my feelings of confusion, terror and awe.
Because you did not recognize the hand of help from the five families, you continue to wander here, in this bardo. But, now comes forth the five orders of guides at once. They invite us to freedom. Recognize them.
There is an enormous explosion of lights – the “lights of the union of consciousness”:
Space and Voidness
Form and Voidness
Feeling and Voidness
Phenomena and Voidness
Perception and Voidness
Concept and Voidness
“All these cleansing Radiations are reflections of my own essential self shining.”

The Tenth Chamber –
“Now voyagers who hold knowledge will appear. At the same moment, the pathway to the brute dimension, the dimension of stupidity and passion for ignorance and unknowingness will open up and try to attract me.”
“All these guides have come from the dimension of Purgatory to receive me and to help me through the Labyrinth: I invoke their presence… I have not be able to allow myself to be helped by them. Have pity on me! May the knowledge-holding guides not allow me to keep downspiraling any further than this, but hold me up through their compassion and mercy.”
Now the voyager has been given many opportunities by the friendly guides and the voyager is not able to accept the help. The voyager is not able to embrace the infinity of their Essential Nature – we are blinded by our conditioning.
But, wait – we can remember ever so slightly ‘something.’ Something that keeps calling us to the higher. This is how we prepare for our labyrinth voyage. We practice NOW to recognize the ambushes that are set by our own nature. We practice recognizing the path toward freedom. Now, today our practice unfolds for one reason….
We are in the World, but we are not of IT.
