The Two Selves

The Two Selves

[1] “I am He who dominates by overwhelming and eliminating my powerful enemies. “

Usually when we hear an expression of this sort, we conjure an image of an epic battle between a legendary hero and a mythic dark force. There is some truth to that formulation. It certainly depicts many books and movies that I so enjoy.

In the end, the hero (good) defeats the dark force (bad) and in doing so somehow achieves some sort of inner victory. I guess the hero literature (Carlyle and Campbell) shows us the external voyage of the hero’s inner passage.

Or, in spiritual literature, certainly in classical Christian thought, there are two parts of ourselves and we must battle against one to the betterment of the other. But, maybe there is a different way to view this classic struggle.

If we look at EJ Gold’s HBM (see our discussions here) he depicts our situation as a being with TWO electrical bodies. One is the so called “lower self” the Human Biological Machine, and the other is the “higher self”, known here as the Essential Self.

One aspect is to depict a battle between the two, one defeats the other. One wins and one losses. Another approach is to see the struggle as a conflict about who is in charge. Our duty in part is to change the leader from the Externally driven HBM and allow the Inner World of the Essential self to lead us.
SO, we do not battle one to extol the other, but rather, when the Proper Master comes Home, the HBM rather then serves the Essential Self with an energy and force now directed in a different manner. We start to understand the harmony of our being.

How does this come about? Re-Read the first line again… with this different emphasis. We dominate our “own material appetites and desires” [3] by allowing the higher to guide us. Then, we simply loose the taste for the lower. We find and partake in a new meal at a new table.
